Natalie and Eric’s Engagement Photos with Cherry Blossoms

In the spring of 2022, I had the opportunity to photography my very first cherry blossom engagement session. My clients, Natalie and Eric, are big fans of New Haven. I would later learn that Wooster Square Park is one of their favorite spots.

According to Wikipedia, cherry blossom trees are common in East Asia. The flower itself is Japan’s national flower. In America, there is a strong perceived connection between cherry blossoms and Japan. Incidentally, this is for good reason: Japan has gifted cherry blossom trees to America multiple times.

Here’s how their spring engagement session went as we explored the cherry blossoms.

Where Do Cherry Blossoms Grow in CT?

Connecticut cherry blossoms are a thing, too. Here, Greenwich and Stamford have them. But the most popular cherry blossom location in Connecticut is New Haven. Cherry blossom bloom season in Connecticut is generally at the end of April and only lasts about a week.

If you’re interested in experiencing something like this, then a Wooster Square Park engagement session might be the way. Just look:

This is exactly what Natalie and Eric wanted to take advantage of, so we went to Wooster Square Park for their cherry blossom engagement session.

How Practical Is a Cherry Blossom Engagement Session?

Undoubtedly, you’ll learn that timing is everything when planning your wedding. This is particularly true if you’re shooting for something as specific and fleeting as a seasonal engagement session.

Now, consider that crowds may play a factor. I photographed Natalie and Eric’s session on a weeknight so that we could maximize what remained of Connecticut’s cherry blossom blooms.

I love to include multiple locations in my sessions with couples. This goes for weddings and engagement sessions alike. Natalie and Eric were open to this idea, so we definitely got some walking in.

Exploring Downtown New Haven

One of the most underrated engagement session location ideas in Connecticut is the campus of Yale University. The Beinecke Rare Book Library has quickly become one of my favorite buildings in the state.

Natalie and Eric’s engagement session in New Haven was the first of several I’ve photographed recently. If there’s anything I learned, it’s that downtown New Haven is absolutely wonderful for dates. This city is so diverse and bustling that there’s always something to do. It’s also quite walkable.

Natalie and Eric’s session was awesome and their wedding day was even better. The ended up getting married at Cascade in Hamden, but we actually returned to Wooster Square Park for portraits!
