History of Salem Herbfarm

Salem Herbfarm’s story starts back in the 1800s.

Anne Duncan and her husband, Joe, became the owners in 1997. Prior to that, Anne’s family became owners of the property decades before.

A bride walks in a white wedding dress while holding a tunic-style veil during her Salem Herbfarm wedding.

The farm sold garden staples such as cilantro, lettuce, and parsley for years.

Eventually, however, the Duncans converted their property into purely a Connecticut wedding venue in 2018.

These days, Salem Herbfarm operates exclusively as a wedding venue; it’s no longer a functional, public herbfarm.

Salem Herbfarm Wedding Vibe and Features

The Salem Herbfarm is a low-key, rustic, New England garden-lover’s dream wedding venue.

It’s easy to access, being located on a main road (route 85). But the property sits back far, providing plenty of privacy and separation from noise. Therefore, it’s about as far from a city wedding venue as you can get.

In short, here are some characteristics of typical weddings at Salem Herbfarm:

  • Year-round weddings with indoor, outdoor open air, and outdoor covered options
  • No real guest maximum
  • Choose from a list of venue-preferred caterers or bring your own (food trucks are a great option for this venue)
  • The Booze Hut, an outdoor, centrally located bar
  • Fire pit, water fountains, plenty of outdoor seating, and many reception areas for guests to spread out
  • Lots of wedding day configuration options

The Salem Herbfarm Grounds

The main attraction of a wedding at Salem Herbfarm is the venue’s exterior. The grounds are interesting, well maintained, and simply beautiful.

If you’re planning for a first look, you’ll have plenty of portrait locations to choose from before your ceremony.

On one side of the property is a gravel walkway with a beautiful, wooden trellis. It’s under this that one (or both) of you will make your grand entry if you have a ceremony by the foundation.

Opposite the fountain location, on the other side of the central fire pit (there are two others elsewhere), is a grassy garden courtyard. This area is open to the air, but the hardscaping features (i.e. stone and hedge walls) give it an intimate feel. It’s absolutely picturesque for an outdoor ceremony.

And there’s also a covered greenhouse with a paved floor. This spot is huge at over 3000 square feet, apparently able to hold over 200 during your Salem Herbfarm wedding.

The Salem Herbfarm Barn

With room for about 140, the Salem Herbfarm barn is the default location for a wedding reception at this venue. It’s whimsically decorated with farm photos and signs, including some items from The Salem Herbfarm’s past as a working farm.

A cake with macaroons on top and gold flakes on white frosting sits out during a wedding at Salem Herbfarm.

Throw in the perfect string lights and you’ve got some great ambience. This is where the fully-functional bathrooms are, too, as well as the small getting ready area.

This space is cozy, so plan accordingly when deciding on dinner and dancing plans. Despite the tight arrangement, Salem Herbfarm’s barn is great for receptions.

Wedding Portraits at Salem Herbfarm

As a wedding photographer who focuses on cinematic storytelling, my favorite aspect of a Salem Herbfarm wedding is the opportunity to take portraits.

A bride and groom hold sparklers and dance as their guests surround them with sparklers of their own during a nighttime Salem Herbfarm wedding.

Again, there’s so much going on with the plant life and landscaping that varied locations/backgrounds are plentiful.

The Best Hotel for a Salem Herbfarm Wedding

Hands down, the best hotel to book for your Salem Herbfarm wedding is Mohegan Sun. It’s located about 20 minutes away from the venue.

As a hotel, Mohegan Sun is huge, split between the Sky and Earth Towers. Therefore, room blocks are easy to reserve. It also has spa amenities, not to mention plenty to do for your guests before and after your wedding.
